Current Liturgical Season: Trinity Sunday

Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday in Ordinary Time. It is a feast day that is particular to the Western Church. The irony of this feast day is that in a very real way, every Sunday is a celebration of the Holy Trinity, as we worship Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in every liturgy. However, the reason this feast emerged was for the sake of emphasis and articulation of this reality. It is on this Sunday that we step back and remind ourselves of the great and glorious mystery of the Trinity. However, in doing this we don’t worship a diagram or a doctrine, but a living God who exists in a unity and community within Himself, and offers us participation in this community through the mediation of the Son. This Sunday also celebrates the culmination of revelation in which we come to know God’s nature as Triune and explore its implications for our lives and community.

The color for Trinity Sunday is white or gold in order to emphasize the purity and holiness of the Trinity as well as a reminder that we worship the God who dwells in inapproachable light, has made Himself known to us. White and Gold are typically used to designate holy times in the Church Calendar. All of Eastertide is white, as well as All Saints Day, Christmas, and Epiphany, to name a few.
